Evolution Korea

Until recently the scientific community in Korea has refrained from engaging with creationists, afraid that it could boost the credibility of the group. The silence is no longer an alternative.

The STR has been fighting to remove information about evolution from textbooks including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird. However, this is just one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains the changes in genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on fact that living organisms adapt to their surroundings and this can lead to changes in genes or even complete genomes. These changes could over generations result in the development of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It explains how people who have advantages are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with less advantageous traits. In time, this disparity in reproduction can lead to the development of completely new species.

The term “evolution” comes from the Latin word”evolution” which means unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has had many different meanings over the years as it has taken form in the sciences and other fields. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into a new species. The term”transmutation” was coined by Lamarck’s disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term “evolution” from Geoffroy’s student to describe the notion that existing species evolve into different species in a gradual and predictable manner.

In recent years evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living organisms develop traits that increase their chances of survival, or their ability to produce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can lead a population to acquire new physical traits or biological functions. Natural selection is the main force behind the majority of evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, can’t be considered to be evolution since they aren’t passed down to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has stood the tests of time and thousands of scientific studies Creationists have taken advantage of the idea that the theory is controversial and argue that it should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won some victories against evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary origins for humans and Archaeopteryx – a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestor of birds.

Why is Evolution Important?

Evolution explains the origins and evolution of Earth and all living species. It also serves as a basis of biology, and aids scientists comprehend how living organisms operate and grow. Evolution also shows the connections between species. Scientists study evolution in order to better comprehend nature and make valuable discoveries such as new drugs.

The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains so much about the universe as well as life on earth and has been rigorously tested and verified over the course of many years. Many people, including religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory. It is essential to remember that evolutionary biology isn’t in conflict with religious beliefs as it only addresses physical objects, events and processes.

Many religious people have discovered a way to reconcile evolution with their convictions. For example some Christians believe that God created the world through evolution and that humans have an ancestral lineage with other animals.

It is essential for scientists to support the teaching of evolution. In certain countries, anti-evolution sentiment has been growing. In the United States some states have taken measures to restrict teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is pushing for textbooks to include content on the evolution of horses and their ancestral avian species Archaeopteryx.

While these are disturbing developments, it is also important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a broad range of sources, including fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.

The majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. This belief is based on many different reasons. Scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions such as the development of new medicines and other treatments, while others use it to improve the quality of animal and plant species, usually for the benefit of humans. Some scientists are simply curious, whereas others have an intense faith in God.

What is Creationism?

Creationists are those who believe that God created the universe and everything within it. They also believe that the Bible is God’s word and should be believed to be true. While not all creationists are Christian however, they are a majority. Creationists generally fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The YECs are the best known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the first six days of creation was true and that the universe and life on Earth were created only recently.

OECs aren’t as known however their beliefs are as passionate as the YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and believe that evolution is a myth.

Both types of creationism reject that scientific principles such as biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life started on Earth. They argue that evolution isn’t possible because it would require the creation of a miracle, and the pioneers of modern science rejected miracles out of fear of losing credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and also special creation. They consider their views to be “theistic evolution.” This is sometimes also known as “continuous creationism” or “evolution from the original species.” In this theory, God creates the original species, and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event known as the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all the original species were created at the same time and that they gradually evolved. They deny the notion of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating life cannot arise from non-living matter.

In general, the creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. This is a position that is backed by a myriad of professional associations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists are however more flexible and allow evolution and creationism to be included in their curriculum.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks announced recently that they will remove references to evolution from their books. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. STR has won its first victory in taking away examples of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx from textbooks. It is now focusing on removing snippets of Darwin’s notorious finch research and on human evolution too.

STR claims to have the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says is to cleanse the world of what it calls “atheist materialism” which portrays an unflattering image for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that half of them did not believe evolution. The reasons for this aren’t entirely certain, but could be related to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR achieved many things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and a book. One of these was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a cosmological perspective. It sparked interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university and it continues to be taught to this day.

On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR’s John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
